Fox's Shepard Smith claims that many of his fellow hosts are there strictly to entertain, and that he and they "serve different masters."

Courtesy of Time:

Smith says he’s unbothered by the divergence between his reporting and Fox’s opinion slate. “We serve different masters. We work for different reporting chains, we have different rules. They don’t really have rules on the opinion side. They can say whatever they want. If it’s their opinion. I don’t really watch a lot of opinion programming. I’m busy.” He laughs, enigmatic punctuation that may indicate he’d been trying for a bon mot, or might just be a Mississippi-nice way of indicating he’s said what he’s going to say, bless my heart.

 .........

Unlike some portion of the audience that reflexively switches on Fox News, Smith is disengaged by politics. “I get it,” he says, “that some of our opinion programming is there strictly to be entertaining. I get that. I don’t work there. I wouldn’t work there. I don’t want to sit around and yell at each other and talk about your philosophy and my philosophy. That sounds horrible to me.”

So to sum up, much of Fox News broadcasting is there simply to entertain, there are no real rules on the opinions side of things, and yet this is Donald Trump's go to source for news and policy advice.

Do you remember that 2012 study which found that people who watched Fox News were less informed than people who did not watch any news at all?

Well apparently that's not a bug.

It's a feature.

And now it features into how the president makes decisions which effect this country, and our world.

P.S. By the way since this story came out suddenly we are learning that Smith is going on a "previously planned vacation."

Thea last time I heard that phrase was when it was used to explain why Bill O'Reilly was not showing up to do his show after those sexual harassment allegations became public.

I hope that is not the case here as Shep is probably the last remaining actual journalist currently working at Fox News.

P.P.S. Here was Hannity's response.
I think Hannity is confusing "breaks news" with "pulls conspiracy theories out of my ass."

Because "Hannity" is all that and more. GAH.

I don't do twitter, but I'd sure like to tweet Chris Wallace, "your Dad must be SO proud where you ended up."

For over 10yrs all of us know people who have been brainwashed by fox no news network. Sold by the saying the only trusted news channel to watch. Fox News station should be charged with putting this country in danger and damages to our relationships with friends and family. Fox no news is as evil as it gets and a danger to society.

  3. Hannity gives himself credit for nothing. None of those so called scandals were scandals except for Fake Noise viewers. Everyone has been debunked over and over, but apparently no one tells Fake Noise.

  4. If Smith is being fired, it's probably good for all parties. Then Fox can have NO credible journalists whatsoever and no defense from being nothing but an electronic version of The Enquirer, featuring opinion, hate, scandals and lies. They have defended their right to lie repeatedly, and WON. So let them be all lies all the time with no actual journalists or real, legitimate news to be their beard.

If Shephard Smith is indeed the journalist with integrity that he claims he is, he'll have no problem getting another job with an actual, legitimate news organization.

I’m sure he can land a morning show called “AM with Shep and the Blonde Bimbo from Fox”.

The problem is that Hannity and all the others at FOX NEWS and their viewers all think that what they do IS report the news. They are so compromised that they really can't tell the news from opinion. And, sadly they thing that the news we value, is fake and made up. It is a sorry and frightening thing that has happened to the USA.

Hannity's lips & nose are orange from butt kissing Trump hoping he will end up with power in Trump's cabinet. He never even graduated college. Plus he looks good on TV to Donald who we know that above all in his reality show that looks come foremost.

"THE BIG IDEA: Donald Trump’s reality television presidency may be getting more star power for season two.

Trump has decided to remove H.R. McMaster as his national security adviser and is actively discussing Fox News contributor John Bolton as a potential successor.

A leading contender to replace Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is Pete Hegseth, the co-host of “Fox and Friends Weekend.”

The president named CNBC analyst and former host Larry Kudlow to replace former Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn as his chief economic adviser on Wednesday.

Heather Nauert, a former co-host of “Fox and Friends,” got promoted on Monday from being a spokeswoman for the State Department to acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs. She replaced Steve Goldstein, who was fired because he publicly contradicted the White House’s claim that Rex Tillerson knew he was being fired before Trump announced it on Twitter. (Is it any coincidence that Mike Pompeo got elevated from Langley to Foggy Bottom the morning after he aggressively went to bat for Trump on the Sunday shows?)"

I'm afraid we're going to end up with fake news tv personalities basically governing us. It sure looks that way.

Not a surprise at all since we have a reality TV show man & inept real estate family running the most powerful country in the world. Not sure how long we will remain the most powerful. We definitely are the most distrusted with a liar-in-chief as well as the most laughable. SAD

What amazes me is that you haven't yet figured out, that it is ALL entertainment! Does not matter what channel. It is all about ratings and satisfying their market audience. Jesus. Wake the fuck up.

I consider entertainment our neutered Siamese cat out in the back yard, with a "lady" come to visit because spring is here when thoughts turned to LOVE. He had no idea what to do.

Fox is not and never has been "entertainment" except for ill-informed fools.

But you are right, it's ALL entertainment and who knows better than that than our "president". He manipulated the tv audience.

Idiocracy is here thanks to fake reailty tv shows & stupid audiences who believe everything they see on TV. That includes the ones in Alaska...I'm SO SICK of ice/alaska shows. I mean a high school drop out dancing in a gorilla suit while possibly pregnant & gaining weight?? And the tea partiers freely admitted cheating on the voting. THIS was the Palin legacy.

And too bad it has taken the latest school shootings and many lives all over the USA THIS TIME for real movement thanks to TEENAGERS! This is what it has taken...people's children being slaughtered.

It's so sad that a 6th grader wrote his will in case he dies by a school shooting.

Back in the 60's we were afraid of our president getting assassinated like Kennedy. Now days we are afraid of our children being assassinated at school.

Stupid white guys and barbie dolls on that channel. It's like the Stepford wives except these are people on tv. Mouthpieces, basically. They say what their master tells them to and when one tries to grow a mind, he gets tarnished.
Trump is doing that now. He is getting rid of people who don't agree with his orange highness. No one seems to be able to call him out on his dictatorship. And meanwhile the smug face of McConnel and Ryan pleasure the one percent.
