There is a story about Down Syndrome and abortion so Fox News dusted off the old Sarah Palin and put her on camera to compare pregnant women to Nazis.

Here is the CBS report that Palin was referring to:

With the rise of prenatal screening tests across Europe and the United States, the number of babies born with Down syndrome has significantly decreased, but few countries have come as close to eradicating Down syndrome births as Iceland.

Since prenatal screening tests were introduced in Iceland in the early 2000s, the vast majority of women -- close to 100 percent -- who received a positive test for Down syndrome terminated their pregnancy.

While the tests are optional, the government states that all expectant mothers must be informed about availability of screening tests, which reveal the likelihood of a child being born with Down syndrome. Around 80 to 85 percent of pregnant women choose to take the prenatal screening test, according to Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik.

Whether you agree with the choices made by these women or not, the important thing is that the women of Iceland, and in most places in America, have a CHOICE about what do with their bodies and their future. And whatever that choice it certainly does not put them in the same category as Nazis!

This is just more hateful rhetoric from Sarah "This is not even my real child" Palin.

In her interview Palin kept talking about "snuffing out the life" of the fetus, but in fact until the baby is born it does not yet have an actual life to be snuffed out.

It is still a fetus, living inside its host body, and the host is calling all of the shots.

Palin also kept referring to these children as not looking like normal every day children, but in fact it is not their appearance which determines the life they will lead, it is their many disabilities.

And let's talk about the life of a child with Down syndrome, a population that I work with quite often.

Yes, they can have relatively normal lives and even become contributing members of society.

That happens. Sometimes.

But their parents will never really have what could be considered a "normal" life since their child will typically ALWAYS be dependent upon them.

It is very helpful if you are wealthy, like the Palins, but if you are not, the financial burden of endless testing, doctor's visits, and special accommodations can be overwhelming.

If you do not think that you are ready for that kind of responsibility, than you probably are not.

Sarah Palin is not somebody who should be giving ANYBODY shit about their life choices, period!

And if Palin is looking for somebody to compare to Nazis, well she is in luck.

Because we have the perfect examples.

I'm not the first to realize that when the coffers and attention go by the way side, out she pulls Trig.

Very wealthy like the Palins, Gryph? They did NOTHING to get the therapies he needed at a young age to give him a fair shot. They just used him like the purchased mascot he is to further her political ambitions.

When she lost in '08, she was going to back to Alassska to further DS Awareness and programs, yet she did nothing of the sort. No WAY am I watching that video. Lying SKANK.

Good. There are enough "normal" people overburdening the resources of this earth without having people birth more of those that require more than their fair share of medical and personal attention and are never truly able to benefit society as a whole.

I get that some women are attached to each zygote that takes root in their uteruses but seriously, the time is now to be more than just a bit picky about adding to our population crisis.

Hopefully what our medical technology will finally accomplish is that we are able to choose our children; choose their characteristics and intelligence and only birth those who will add to society and assist in solving the myriad problems that are leading to our ultimate demise.

I know a lot of people call these little genetically compromised humans " a gift from god" but seriously, what kind of god would have such a cruel streak, oh, wait, never mind.

If you've never known an individual with Downs in your life, you may feel like the above commenters do.
We had a wonderful Downs lady in our family for nearly 63 years. It is very true that these individuals will always, ALWAYS, need someone responsible for their welfare in some way. This dear lady had family devoted to her care. She was capable and motivated to do her best in everything. She could read and write, she held down a job and she was a devoted auntie. You never had to ask her twice to help you with something. She taught us all more about unconditional love than anyone else. I know not every individual with Downs Syndrome is as capable as our aunt was, or as loving and funny(she loved to joke around). But i wouldn't trade the memories of her, or what she taught me about love and the human experience for Anything. She is sorely missed.

There was a DS boy in my community when I was growing up, a few years older than I was. He was known to all the girls in the neighborhood--he'd try to pull up our shirts and try to stick his hand down our pants, so we tried to stick together to fight him off. His parents insisted he could do no wrong and he was one of god's ANGELS. Not even close.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, a blood test came back saying that she had a pretty high chance of having Downs Syndrome, so at that point I gained the right to an amniocentesis test, which normally was only offered to women who were 35 or older. So for a lot of years in this country, most Down Syndrome children have been born to younger women, because younger women couldn't get amniocentesis if they wanted it. The difficult choice for me was that the amnio couldn't really be done until 15 or 16 weeks, and I knew that it would be a much harder decision for me to choose to end a 17 or 18 week pregnancy, rather than say an 8 or 10 week pregnancy. Fortunately, my test came back fine and we never had to make the decision. Nowadays, I believe that they have much, much earlier tests which are less invasive than amnio.

Personally, I would never expect any other woman to terminate a pregnancy for any reason, it's their life, their choice, as far as I'm concerned. But I am very disturbed that other people, like Sarah Palin, are only too happy to force someone like me into a lifetime of stress and medical bills to care for a handicapped child until I died, and all the while worrying about who would take care of that child after I was gone. Interestingly, a friend of mine with a Down Syndrome sibling told me that she loves her sister deeply, but that she herself knew that she could not handle raising a Down Syndrome child, that she didn't have what it took. And, it often ends up that the surviving siblings are the ones who have to take on the care of a disabled sibling after their parents die, so Sarah Palin not only feels comfortable forcing pregnant women into an overwhelming life, but she has no problem forcing the siblings into it as well.

And, think about this, what if the siblings refuse to do it? Then your child may become institutionalized, abused, taken advantage of, etc. There is a lot to think about, and I certainly wouldn't judge anyone who was presented with that scenario.

This is an extremely personal decision between mother and father. Nobody knows their situation. But! What is necessary is that people have a brain. Sex=baby. Don't breed if you cannot handle the plan and outcome. And this medical procedure is not your birth control plan. Be responsible especially if at risk. Sara has a long road ahead. A lifetime. HUGE as was said she will never have a normal life of children growing up and leaving home.

    2. Very few use abortion as "birth control".

Which brings up the interesting fact that the anti-abortion crowd is also anti-birth control. Now there's an oxymoron. If you were against abortion, wouldn't you want free and accessible birth control to prevent those unwanted pregnancies?

But NO. They are anti-SEX. It's the Puritanical scarlet letter thing.

Of course, looking at some of them is motivation enough to get your relevant tubes tied.

It has always bothered me that the "right to life" folks are so unwilling to provide anything else: health care, education, adequate housing, good employment opportunities for the parents, etc. Life doesn't end with birth; it begins then.

We know parents, now in their 80s and with failing health, who have a son, past 50 by now and not in good health, and still are responsible for him. We've wondered what will happen when the parents die. We also know that if their son predeceases them, they will be devastated. The parents were certainly not pleased to have a son with such disabilities (not Down Syndrome), they've never complained and have done everything possible to provide for him. But, after their death, it will simply not have been enough.

  9. If these Fascists want to force women to take to term every fertilized egg that plants itself, then they in turn should be forced to adopt every unwanted fetus brought to term against the mother's will. No mommy shaming. The Mother should be allowed to hand over that baby with the genetic abnormalities and these bible thumpers should immediately be held liable for all medical bills from conception onward. They pay for that kid for everything from that moment on. They should be forced to pay not only for all medical test and therapies but educational remediation too. (All of the stuff TriG hasn't gotten.) They can quit their job and stay home with the kid for the rest of their lives. No nannies for them. And not just one. They should be forced to take every unwanted full term pregnancy in an endless cycle of your turn's next. Ad infinitum until they die. Sorry, but no aging out of this. You can't be against birth control AND abortion and still live your tidy little life pointing fingers. You put up or shut up. And since these righteously indignant bible thumpers won't shut the fuck up, time they stepped up and got handed god's little gifts. One a year should do it.

Uncle G's mom had it rough, but they got thru it. Uncle G's posted about some nasty child abuse he suffered thru at the hands of one of mom's boyfriends. I'm sure they'd both like to go back and change that. They got thru it, and they still have each other. He has broken the cycle of child abuse by how he raised his own daughter. Some were able to rise to the occasion, many did not. No one but the parents should make the decision to have a special needs child. As has been noted, care for these children never ends. These birds should NOT be kept as pets, period. They have a biological attachment that doesn't jive well with moving them from one caretaker to the next. They are so intelligent, and they feel emotional pain like we do. They latch onto ONE person strongly, and this is what they'd do in the wild with their chosen mate, if they were living where they should be. This survival adaptation doesn't translate well into human-pet world often.
Please do not support the exotic bird trade, people! GeorgiaPeach, I don't want a bird as a pet, they have creeeeepy looking feet, and wings are for flying, not being kept prisoner in a cage. I've seen plenty of documentaries about the exotic bird trade. The birds suffer terribly, all because some human wanted one for vanity's sake and didn't think to see things from the bird's POV.

We need to accept that we're all mongrels. And better because of it. And interrelated, despite our color.

i worked with Down's syndrome adults and they are the happiest and most loving people you will find. however, they are a lifetime and more commitment. there is a very easy answer to this and abortions-it's called birth control, and it's cheap and easy to find-Walmart, supermarkets anywhere, and it's easy to use. think before you f**k.

Everyone that I know who has had a Down's pregnancy was married and actively trying to start or enlarge their family. Are you saying that if a woman does not think that she can handle raising a Down Syndrome child, then she should not have any children at all? Early testing and then giving the parents all of the pertinent information to make the best choice for their situation is the solution, not, "Just don't have any kids at all if you can't handle a severely disabled child".

@8:04--no that isn't what was said. The only way to prevent a Down's baby is to not have a Down's baby, hence birth control. There are tests that can predict Down's Syndrome, and then it is that parent's right to make whatever decision is right for their lives, not anyone else's.

‘I Am So Uncomfortable Having This Conversation’: Fox Host On Neo-Nazis

Fox News host Melissa Francis on Wednesday said she was “uncomfortable” being questioned about her staunch defense of President Donald Trump’s remarks blaming “both sides” for violence that erupted at a white supremacist rally where participants changed Nazi slogans over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“He never said equal blame,” Francis said on Fox News’ “Outnumbered.” “No one said equal, and that’s one of the places where this went off the rails.”

“He said there were ‘very good people’ among the neo-Nazi protesters,” Fox News contributor Marie Harf replied. “He did — don’t roll your eyes! He did say those words, Melissa.”

“He didn’t say there were ‘very good people among neo-Nazi protesters.’ He didn’t say that. Find that,” Francis shot back.

“He said there were very good people on the other side,” Harf said. “It was clear what he was talking about.”

“There were people that were opposed to the statues coming down. Look, can I tell you this? I am so uncomfortable having this conversation,” Francis said.

She became visibly emotional and appeared to fight back tears as she continued,

Trump, in his initial reaction, repeated "on many sides, on many sides." His clear intention was to ascribe "equal" blame to the counter protesters and to minimize the evilness of the neo-Nazis and white supremacists. Trump then half-handedly tried to roll back what he had said: it didn't work and it doesn't work for Mr. Alt-Right to try to walk back his boss's nastiness now.

The fact that a former CIA leader – a figure who likely wouldn’t engage in political arguments with a sitting president – is calling out Trump speaks volumes about the line this president has crossed over the past week.

It’s not just Democrats and independents now breaking with this president over his support of white supremacists and Nazis, but Republicans, the intelligence community, and members of the military have also had enough.

The argument that women should not be allowed to test for Down Syndrome because it is making Down Syndrome people too rare or possibly extinct is a rather weird one. That's like saying we should never have invented the Polio vaccine because there won't be enough paralyzed people, or we shouldn't have invented the treatment for leprosy because there won't be enough people to fill the old leper colonies. No it doesn't mean that we will no longer value the Down Syndrome people who are already born, or the few that will be born in the future, it's about lessening unnecessary/unwanted suffering. I have a son with life threatening allergies.......if he had the choice of having a child without allergies, he would take it, because he knows how inconvenient/scary it can be. It doesn't mean that he wouldn't love a child that was born with allergies, that's ridiculous. There is a huge difference between a small clump of cells that is a potential child, and an actual child. Unfortunately, the Right To Life people don't see a distinction. If they did, maybe they would care more about making sure that actual living and breathing children had healthcare and enough food to eat.

Well, if we agree to the fiction that Sarah Palin is really Trig's mother (and it takes a stretch to do that), then she had a right to proceed with the pregnancy just as another woman has and has had the right to terminate it. What anyone else chooses is no business of Sarah Palin's or of ours.

The real tragedy with Trig Palin is that his family failed to provide him with the optimal treatment since his arrival on the scene. He has been, instead, used repeatedly as a pawn to get his "mother" news space. Looks like it worked again.

The child wasn't expected to live.
They were anticipating the death of the special-needs infant and all the attention and sympathy that comes from that. What a distraction from Whose Uterus Did He Come From that would've been.
Except that the kid pulled thru.

I disagree that they would have used baby Trig's expected death for attention. He was not wanted by Sarah. If she had kept watch on her then Bristol would have had a legal, safe, private abortion.

How about we compromise on the "Pro-life" "Pro-Choice" cluster?
Howsabout IF a woman carries a Downs Syndrome child to term then she is allowed free (government-paid) health-care and all that entails (child-care, for example) for her and the child for the rest of their lives?
(You know - like our President and Congress-critters get?)
SURELY the pro-lifers out there would have to agree to THAT, right?

Howsabout we encourage our congress-critters to include THAT in the next anti-abortion bill? Whattayasay?

  42. There's a middle-aged mom who brings her PROFOUNDLY affected Down syndrome daughter to the local public pool occasionally. The daughter takes a foam noodle and her favorite toy (a honey serving dauber) and floats in the 4'6" end of the warm pool while her mother gets some exercise in.

The daughter is now 25 years old. She cannot speak, and her sight is poor. I hadn't seen her for months, and she's lost weight. She apparently has some swallowing issues.

Twenty five years of care. I was exhausted by 12 years of care for my Alzheimer's-affected husband. I can't imagine how her mom copes.
