GLAAD is not pleased with A&E's decision reversing the suspension of Phil Robertson from "Duck Dynasty."
"Phil Robertson should look African American and gay people in the eyes and hear about the hurtful impact of praising Jim Crow laws and comparing gay people to terrorists," the organization said in a statement. "If dialogue with Phil is not part of next steps then A+E has chosen profits over African American and gay people – especially its employees and viewers."
GLAAD was of course one of the first groups to speak out about Robertson's homophobic remarks and inspired A&E to temporarily suspend him.
Clearly A&E has done the math and are convinced that they stand to lose more viewers and advertisers by keeping Robertson off the show, and angering the Biblically homophobic, than they do by allowing him back on the show and angering the gay and progressive community.
I would stop watching the program to demonstrate my irritation at this decision accept for the fact I have never been so hard up for entertainment that I lowered my standards to watch it even once.
I mean once you've seen Deliverance once.
In the Christmas Eve post about Quitter's Duck Dynasty Greta interview this comment was made (about a first baby "Trenton"). Not much discussion about it......since this is Tripp's alleged birthday perhaps a post to revisit this topic might be in order....

A&E used to have great programming in the 90's and then they jumped on the reality bandwagon and it's been all downhill. It was one of the first channels I remember watching when we got cable in the 80's and it had some great programming but it's been basically unwatchable since then.

That doesn't mean that A&E should get to host a show featuring a bigoted and homophobic family, however, there are other channels that actually cater to LGBT and have programming and hosts that are supporters of the cause and are much better alternatives than the reality crapfest that A&E has become.

I remember that. They really used to be the Arts and Entertainment network almost on the par with PBS. Then they just started to slip. Now they have nothing on but reality crap and I do mean crappy reality. Once Project Runway went, there was no reason to watch them any more. They have an occasional movie but not worth keeping them in my line-up anymore.

Boycotting their programming does no good except for self gratification, If you pay for cable or satelite TV that carries their programs then you're still paying for it and there is no way to single them out for non payment however we can still give A&E the Limbaugh treatment , Go after the advertisers, email & write them and tell them as long as they continue with A&E you will no longer buy their products.

I totally disagree with Phil's comments, but I think it's unwise to shun him because of it. Better would be to engage in a public dialogue with him. It's easy to believe what he believes when surrounded by people who won't question what he says. And driving such language underground only strengthens the belief.

Let's repeat something to make it very clear. Sarah was asked by Greta to defend some pretty vulgar comments. Greta even said that there were other ways to say the same things. Did Sarah agree with the way that Phil said it? That's important, that vagina and anus stuff (sorry, but I'm quoting Phil). Sarah could not comment because she had not bothered to read the interview. What's the problem? That was Sarah's job-- to comment on Greta's show about the DD problem. She was going to be asked about Phil and Sarah did not do her homework.

I have no idea if it's possible to engage Phil in dialogue. But I can't imagine that media couldn't ask to engage him in dialogue. My guess is, just like with Sarah & Katie, they will look stupid. Perhaps we would learn something we didn't know or realize about his life. And perhaps he would refuse, and that refusal to engage would be out there for everyone to see, and it would also speak volumes.

The Roberson's admitted in the past that the show is fake by saying the producers come to them before each show and give them a situation which they ad lib through for a show. I have only watch parts of a couple of shows and I've never had the impression the show was real. For instance, in one show one of them comes in the room where they are all sitting and surprises them with tickets to Hawaii. From there they do the show in Hawaii which again shows fake circumstances to base their story lines off of.

It highlights many of the inequities that were present in the Southern American states and explains very succinctly how we have come to be such a divided country in this modern age. I took a film class in college (in 1988) and it was required viewing. It has a lot to say.

Punishment, what punishment? Right after the DD comments, A&E had a non-stop marathon of DD programs. The next season h as already been filmed. Someone made the joke that it's like punishing a baseball player by suspending him for the month of January. The whole thing was a publicity stunt, with Phil Robertson, one shrewd marketing dude, making sure that his family got lots of attention. No small coincidence that Sarah jumped on his bandwagon without bothering to read the comments. It was good publicity for them-- oooh, and Sarah had just been in Monroe, visiting the Ducks.

DeleteThey may have gotten some free publicity for Duck Dynasty and attracted some viewers. But I think in the long run they will lose more viewers for the network in general. I for one will be taking A&E OFF my channel lineup on my VCR/TV so I will never even know what it on. I won't be missing much since their program has deteriorated so much in the last few years it isn't even worth keeping it for the occasional movie. The only reality show worth watching was Project Runway and it's on Lifetime now. I can't think of any quality program A&E has that is either Art or Entertainment.

They are looking for husbands for 15-16 year olds, husbands that run away from their drunken attacks and have a woman to broker the escape and pay off the injured. DeleteA&E used to be a great network but now it's nothing but trash. I pretty much stopped watching when the lost Project Runway . Now it isn't even worth keeping it on my channel lineup. If A&E has decided they'd rather cater to the redneck hillbilly trailer trash crowd, then they've made their choice. In which case I think Tim Gunn made the right decision to cut ties with A&E. A&E is no longer interested in offering the quality programming those that watch PBS would be interested in.

My only appointment TV with A&E was Law & Order reruns, and they moved to TNT a decade ago. Even before this ugly event, I was doing a pretty good job boycotting A&E anyway.
