Does Fox News turn its female reporters into the journalistic equivalent of Stepford wives?

There's something creepy going on at Fox News, and it's not just the skewed way they choose to report the news. When a woman gets a job on the "fair and balanced" news network, she gets "Foxified." No matter how she looks or how old she is when she signs her contract, these female contributors transform, appearing on our screens strangely clone-like, blonde and so heavily made up they all look around 40.

Fox News is a modern day Stepford factory for accomplished women. By turning professors and authors into porn star doppelgangers, the network effectively communicates what women say is not as important how they appear.

The above statements are from an article by Margot Macgowan co-founder of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership. (Clearly a place that would repel Sarah Palin the way sunlight repels a vampire.)

You know I have always been kind of curious as to why the women at Fox all look so much alike, and this article points that out in very graphic fashion. (Wait until you see the before and after shots of Liz Wiehl!)

And let me remind you that Sarah Palin also went through a fairly extensive cosmetic procedure before SHE was allowed to appear on the Fox network as well. As she was already a household name!

Just take a look at the graphic at the top of this post and ask yourself, "What does this say about the management at Fox?"  And then ask, "What does this say about the Fox viewers?"  And then finally for the $24,000 question, "What does it say about the women who work at Fox?"

And then let me know how long it took before the hairs on the back of your neck settled back down into place.

The funny thing is, even the women on our local Fox affiliate have the same look.

Sure wish they would make SP go blond, I can't think of anything more hysterical.

  3. My guess is a marketing company looked at what type of "look" appealed to Fox viewers. Presto, blond women who all look alike. It is CREEPY how much FOX news has manipulated the public with all it's tricks.

They don't change, they're all picked because they look the same. Blonde and beautiful and if you can't see that then you've got a political problem to deal with. Just because Fox is over the edge with it's rightwing bias doesn't mean the women don't look good my boy.

  6. these gals with their bleached hair, low-cut tops, short skirts and CFM pumps truly believe they are liberated post-modern feminists.
honestly, IMO, they are setting working women back decades with their hyper-sexualized wardrobes and their goofy wide-eyed facial expressions -- which they all seem to be coached in.

funny thing is, it seems Greta is the token frumpy "Dem" gal on Fox. which is laughable in and of itself

    OMG, OMG, OMG.

While I am actively being horrified by the photographs in this posting,I am listening to Hardball where Pat Buchanan is riffing on the nobility of the Confederacy and the righteousness of its cause. Gees, Lousie - I really, really feel weirded-out.

All this thanks to the proclamation of the VA Governor. The right has successfully managed to regurgitate the Civil War and argue in favor of succession.

I usually wait for news until Keith and Rachel come on, but Pat's blast of pooh coming on while I was reading your post and I discovered I couldn't turn it off - what a train wreck. He, like so many old, white Conservatives are just going off the deep-end.

Glad you found and posted this information. I hope it wakes more people up. Fox News is dangerous on so many levels. It really does work on the subconscious to devalue women. One only has to think about all the blond jokes (deserved or not) to know that.

Aha - a Democratic Representative (Cohen of TN) has come out calling the Tea Partiers the KKK without the hoods and robes!

Everyone assume their battle stations? Goodness knows, it could come to that. I sincerely hope not, but you'd think these folks would feel enough shame to slink home by now.

One tiny observation: when I sawthe Liz Wiehl photos you told us to take note of, I thought about one other thing that happens to women.

Women with curly hair of any race have been conditioned to feel that they will not be thought of as beautiful unless they have straight hair. Curly hair denotes intellect and ethnicity - it is supposed to be threatening to insecure men.

Well, Fox seems to subscribe to that theory.

Producer detained after death of wife in Mexico

By E. EDUARDO CASTILLO, Associated Press Writer E. Eduardo Castillo, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 21 mins ago

MEXICO CITY – "Pimp My Ride" and former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman was detained Thursday as a suspect in his wife's death days after reporting her missing in the resort city of Cancun, a Mexican official said.

The body of Monica Beresford-Redman was found Thursday in a sewer at the swanky Moon Palace resort where the family was on vacation, according to Bello Rodriguez, the outgoing attorney general for Quintana Roo state, where Cancun is located.

Beresford-Redman was nominated for three Emmys for his work on "Survivor," the long-running reality TV competition that strands tribes of strangers in remote locales to outwit, outplay and outlast each other for a $1 million prize.

Bruce Beresford-Redman worked for reality TV giant Mark Burnett, who produces "Survivor" and is currently producing Sarah Palin's eight-part series about her home state of Alaska.

The women's movement bombed a long time ago. The bigger question is why have women allowed themselves to be objectified. It's 2010 and the only women of prominence are Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman? Where are the stateswomen of yore, the Barbara Jordans and the Shirley Chisholms?

      We haven't "allowed ourselves".
Society has pounded into everyone's heads that a woman's appearance is all that matters. Just turn on a TV, open any magazine or simply watch the news. For the general female population, it is nearly impossible to not try to look your best because we are valued on our looks. It's fuc*Ed up.
If we don't look like societies expectation we are not worthy, out boyfriend's and husband's will ALWSYS be perverted inconsiderate a*sholes & ogle ovrr other women. It sucks. It's wrong and men act as though they cannot control themselves and most people just accept it. Accept for me. My bf will not and no longer watches porn because it is a better. If he wants to get off to other women, he can do it single. Period. Fuc* off you fuc*in men pigs. I hate you all you winey perverted, lack of self control perverts. It's not ok.

The other thing that is creepy, and you can't see it in these pictures, is they all appear on air dressed in what I consider party dresses. Sleeveless, lowcut, short satiny dresses for going to a dance or party, not for broadcasting the news. The only one who wears business attire is Greta. The men all wear a suit coat and rarely appear without a tie unless they are on location.

  14. Trolling for viewers on the bottom of the pond. What gets their attention? Hot babes.

It doesn't matter what the hot babes are saying, nobody is really listening anyway.

What's next? Topless? Naked with a beer in each hand?

I'm sure FOX fans would love it and tell us we're all just jealous of the FOX babe's good looks. They always miss the point. Doh.

Yes, and except for the two photos with the blue blouse, its all girly colors like rose, coral, pink, fuschia tones.

Remember when asked about sharing the ticket with Palin, Beck said something about her needing to stay in the kitchen?

Then we have Steele and the RNC bill for the fancy strip club.

I'm not a prude either, but these Faux people are acting and thinking they are foxy.

Remember the face lift Greta got just before her debut on FOXNews?

She claimed in an article (People Feb 18, 2002)that FOX did not put her up to it - and there is a disclaimer from Ailes to that effect - and she explained away the 'blond highlights' to the brilliant camera lighting.

Next thing you know, Palin will resurface as a blond.

  24. Studied gender stereotyping in college as well as media stereotyping, and it is much more subtle and pervasive than this. Note in print journalism of any type that women always have qualifiers (i.e., something about their clothing, hair, makeup, appearance, or their emotions) where it is rare to see any qualifiers for men (unless they are persons of color). The subtle message is that the subject is automatically male (white), and everyone else is "other."

Another point, is that a large proportion of Fox viewers are Christian evangelicals and following the belief system that man is dominant, women subsume themselves to the male desires and groom themselves to please their man. Men in this culture often like women with long hair, low-cut clothing, lots of make-up, etc. (think Tammy Faye).

Also, please remember that I am generalizing in a very big way, but there is some statistical validation for these points and studies in linguistics, media, and sociology among other fields have been done on these subjects. I(sorry, I get kind of wonky).

If you took the looks and brains of all of these women and put them into one female, she wouldn't have the itellect, sophistication or class of Rachel Maddow.

I hate the stupid candy colored party clothes! And what about the explosion of hair extensions on these women (and the female guests - what...do they have a room of spare hair extensions for the guests to put on)? The awful over-done eye-make-up ....so pathetic. What is wrong with these women? Oh, I know. They'll do anything for the money, I guess. One of the few women who does not seem to fall into this "objectification" role is Melissa Francis (even though she is blonde). She seems a little more "normal" (or at least as normal as you can seem on Fox). I hate that one who sits in for Elizabeth sometimes - she dresses like a girly cupcake and giggles so much...it's disturbing.....
